The newspaper article tells us that Carolyn Rice Brown was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts at Wheaton College in Norton. Mrs. Brown was an alumna of Wheaton, where she majored in Philosophy and was awarded Phi Betta Kappa.
She was the principal dancer of the Merce Cunningham Dance Co. from 1953 until her retirement.
Mrs. Brown was considered by critics and thepublic as one of the outstanding modern dancers. She was the recipient of the annual award of Dance Magazine in 1970. In addition, Mrs. Brown was a teacher at the Cunningham School, the Connecticut College School of the Dance and the University of California at Los Angeles. She also has written several articles on dance.
