The obituary tells us that Mr. Charlie Sweeney was associated with the park and recreation department during the depression years, World War II and the critical post-war period.
Mr. Sweeney took advantage of WPA and other depression programs to provide needed improvements in recreational facilities and with Recreation Director O'Malley enlarged the program of activities.
Mr. Sweeney was described as a person who had sincere interest in the welfare of the young in Fitchburg and expressed his sorrow and distress over youthful vandalism in parks and playgrounds.
