Four page document written by Stephen Twining titled: "Fitchburg's Monument to Her Civil War Dead, A Commemoration of the 140th Anniversary of the Monument's Dedication." A few years after the Civil War ended Fitchburg's Soldiers' Monument Committee obtained the land for Monument Park and had a Civil War Monument erected. The dedication of the Monument took place on June 24, 1874. The 140th Anniversary of the monument's dedication was in June 2014. Some highlights from the document include: 1. A concise history of the Civil War from start to end. 2. In 1860 Fitchburg had a population of 7,805 people. Around 600-700 men enlisted in the military and about 150 of those did not survive the war. You just know that everyone was related or knew a soldier that left for war and did not return. 3. The Monument Committee deposited a box within the main part of the monument, the contents of which were formally consigned to posterity. Among the contents in the box were copies of the contract with S.A. Wheeler & Son for the granite foundation, the contract with Runels & Davis of Lowell for the granite superstructure, and the contract with Martin Milmore of Boston for the bronze statues and tablets. |
