The newspaper article tells us that the Concord Reformatory was build by a Fitchburg resident, the late Capt. Albert Kelsey. When Capt. Kelsey was 15, he was apprenticed to Zachariah Sheldon and build the Wesley Methodist Church before the age of 20. At 24, he went to work on the Court House in Boston and was superintendent of extensive additions tothe State House. In 1850, he made the big canal and guard locks at Lewiston, Maine. Mr. Kelsey was named a commander of the Washington Light Guard of Boston and later of the Lewiston Maine Light Infantry. He died in his 90th year and is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Capt. Kelsey's grandfather was the model for the Minute Man Statue in Lexington. |
