Booklet titled: "Dedication and Laying of Corner Stone of St. Boniface Church - Lunenburg, Massachusetts." October 9, 1954 by His Excellency Most Rev. John J. Wright, D.D. Bishop of Worcester The First Pastor was Rev. John E. O'Toole (1950 - 1952). The Second and Present Pastor listed is Rev. Peter B. Malloy ( 1952 - present). On June 24, 1950, His Excellency, John J. Wright, Bishop of Worcester, announced his intention to create the first Catholic parish in the town of Lunenburg, to be known as St. Boniface Parish. Rev John E. O'Toole started the parish officially on July 5, 1950. Mass was celebrated for the first time in Lunenburg on Sunday, July 9, 1950 at 8:30am at the Town Hall, with a second Mass said at the Whalom Ball Room at 10:30. In the winter months the second Mass was said in the Whalom Roller Skating Rink. The first Mass in the new Church Building was on June 19, 1954. Saint Boniface was a great English-born Benedictine monk who achieved a three-fold fame as a great missionary, a great figure of history, and a great human character and saint. He is known as the Apostle of Germany. However, his character and work are so typically Catholic that Catholics of every nationality look up to him and claim him as their own. Also included is a 5" x 7" black and white photo of the interior of St. Boniface Church. |
