Scope & Content |
Newspaper clippings and a brochure from 1997 and 1999 with articles on REACH (Recreation, Education, Arts, Culture, and History). The REACH Fitchburg collaborators include Fitchburg State College, Fitchburg Historical Society, Fitchburg Art Museum, Fitchburg by Design, and the Fitchburg Economic Development Commission. The REACH group did a series of walking and driving guides for Fitchburg. In one article, Mary Chapin Durling, cultural affairs coordinator at Fitchburg State noted: Our hope is that the guides will promote cultural tourism and civic pride. One of the guides promoted the architecture of Fitchburg architect Henry M. Francis. The REACH brochure is titled: A Guide to Fitchburg's Neighborhoods Yesterday & Today. It documents both Fitchburg of Yesterday in 1899 and Fitchburg of Today 1999. The yesterday info shows a map of the Immigrant neighborhoods and eleven historical photos related to those areas. The today info lists the many nationalities making up Fitchburg (around 50 countries) and has five photos of the different groups. The front cover of the brochure has an excellent photo of the Fitchburg Depot Train Station with many people gathering around a train and the station. At the height of immigration there were 90 passenger trains stopping at the station. |
