Three black and white photos of the construction of the Calvinistic Congregational Church in 1896, located at the corner of Main and Rollstone Streets. The pictures are 9.5" x 7.5", and are framed with borders measuring 12.5"x10.5." The first photo, dated from May 1896, shows the church construction from the Rollstone St. view, and includes a view of Main St. in the background with the Sentinel Elm and horse watering trough. There are stone masons, carpenters, and wooden framework and hoists in the picture. The signs on the wooden border around the building include ads for Moxie, Coca-Cola, and Kimball & Co. Clothing. The Moxie ad notes: Drink Delicious Moxie Nerve Food. The second photo, dated from July 1896, shows the church from the corner of Main and Rollstone Streets. There is wooden scaffolding around the building and stone masons building up the brown sandstone building blocks. The wooden framework for the sanctuary ceiling is visible as well as the three front door openings. The ad on the wooden border is for The Barnum and Bailey Greatest Show on Earth set for July 14. The third photo, dated from Sept. 1896, shows the main clock and bell tower and secondary tower under construction. The wooden scaffolding and a wooden ladder are reaching high in the sky at the clock tower. The workers are posing in front of the opening for the rose window in the front of the building. The ads on the wooden border note Snider's Catsup, and theater titles: New 8 Bells and A Baggage Check. This photo has the name: William MacFarlane written on the back, with an address on Myrtle Ave in Fitchburg. Also stamped on the back is: J.H. Golby, Photographer, Fitchburg, Mass. This new C.C. Church building, also known as the Third Meeting House, was opened in February 1897. The building was designed by Fitchburg architect Henry M. Francis and he considered it one of his greatest designs. C.C. Church merged with the First United Methodist Church to become Faith United Parish in 1967. The FUP Church closed in June 2018. The Church Casa de Gracia y Restauración is the current owner of the building and currently holds their worship services there. |
