My parents lived on the third floor of a six-family that my grandfather had built at the beginning of the 1900's. It was in the Cleghorn section of Fitchburg, carved out of a corner of St. Joseph's parking lot and directly across from the Church. In those days, Cleghorn was home to some 10,000 French-Canadians - so I was told. Even if an exaggeration, there were enough French-Canadians when I was a kid that those who didn't speak French needed interpreters. The book goes into some Acadian History from the 1600's. It discusses the early genealogy of the Laure, or Lord, family. The family moved to Fitchburg in 1885 as it provided an attractive French community and jobs in the mills along the Nashua River including Iver Johnson's company.
